Modern book material is often in a poor state of preservation despite its rather recent production. Sometimes the main deterioration factors are intrinsic to the material and concern its composition, often of an acidic nature, which exposes the media to greater risks to its durability. Large-scale book production and the need to speed up manufacturing processes have led to structural systems that are subject to weakening, fractures, and rapid deterioration of the material.
The introduction of lignin in the pulp for paper production, together with extremely refined fibre processing and bindings made with structures and adhesives unsuitable for preservation, has contributed to a considerable acceleration in the material’s degradation processes, hence making it necessary to search for conservation systems and solutions that can preserve it from further damage and prolong its life.
This is the reason why we propose and produce conservative bindings for modern material, limiting its continuous exposure to mechanical and chemical-physical damage that would lead to the fragmentation of supports. We select and use techniques, materials and products with composition and production characteristics that respect specific conservation parameters and contribute to the slowing down and stabilisation of degradation processes.
